Alexa Ray Joel’s “Only Just A Moment” is a song of heartbreak that doesn’t resolve; it lingers and gnaws. Released as a single through ARJ Music, written and performed by Joel, it is the third from her upcoming EP, Tales From The Winding Tower. The song itself is a slow-burning confession, written in the key of A major, about love taken for granted. It flows on the chords of a soft, lone piano before swelling into a rich string arrangement, leaving the listener to feel every tug of the heartstrings.
“Only Just A Moment” is about emotional imbalance: one person walks away with a memory, while the other is left holding the entire ocean. It captures a type of heartache that is all too familiar to so many people, one filled with unanswered questions that, more often than anyone is willing to admit, can haunt a person’s core for years, even after life has moved far beyond the moment that caused the wound.
Joel’s voice is the strongest reason the song resonates and is felt. There is legitimate pain and longing in her singing. It’s not acted-out Broadway pain à la Les Misérables’ “On My Own.” It is controlled, focused, driven, more adult, and more bruised. The arrangement allows Alexa’s voice to glide softly, without being either overpowering or too restrained. Tony Bruno’s guitar work, Megan Gould’s violin, Karen Waltuch’s viola, Noah Hoffeld’s cello, and the horn touches from John Scarpulla, Mark Miller, and Brad Mason add just enough to let the pain and passion in her voice and piano remain the primary source of emotion.
As in most of her songs, Joel paints a picture so vivid that even someone with little imagination can turn the lyrics into mental images. Using imagery of gambling, pride, desire, and regret, she tells a story about someone who treated love like a casual bet. The words enhance the sting. Joel is not just sad; she is calling out the cruelty of someone who knew the game was rigged and played anyway.
The music video matches the song’s mood, leaning into atmosphere, shadow, and stillness, with a vision of nostalgia. Personally, I saw the emotions broken down by scene: introspection as she sits alone in a room with the piano; realization and hurt as she stands in front of the brick wall; depression, vulnerability, and a sense of being lost when questions cannot be answered, as she stands in complete darkness; and finally, declaration and rebuke as she shouts from the rooftop.
The visual approach gives the song a cinematic frame, turning private heartbreak into something larger and more haunting.
In a music world obsessed with beats, hooks, and repetitive lyrics, Alexa Ray Joel trusts a quieter weapon: feeling. The result is elegant, wounded, and painfully powerful. It may be only just a moment for someone else, but the pain of a broken heart lingers, as does the haunting words and music of this beautiful song.
