Halloween is going to the dogs in San Ramon, and for once, nobody is complaining about it. On Sunday, October 25, City Center Bishop Ranch will surrender its fashionable sidewalks to an unusual collection of furry witches, miniature monsters, four-legged superheroes, and whatever else creative pet owners can persuade their dogs to wear. The annual Howl-O-Ween Costumed Pet Parade promises an afternoon where good looks are optional, good behavior is appreciated, and having a tail is practically a fashion requirement.

From 2 to 3 p.m., Alexander Square will become a canine catwalk as dogs and their owners gather for a free Halloween celebration. Forget designer handbags and expensive shoes. This particular fashion show favors floppy ears, wagging tails, and costumes that might leave a Chihuahua looking like a ferocious lion or a golden retriever resembling an oversized pumpkin. The dogs, of course, may be completely unaware of their newfound celebrity status. Their owners, armed with cameras and an abundance of enthusiasm, will undoubtedly understand the assignment.

The festivities extend well beyond showing off Halloween attire. George, the pet boutique at City Center Bishop Ranch, will provide tasty treats for participating pups, giving even the most costume-resistant dogs a reason to celebrate. A Halloween-themed selfie station will offer opportunities for memorable photographs, although convincing an excited puppy to sit still for the perfect picture might prove more challenging than assembling the costume itself. After all, some dogs were born to pose, while others would rather investigate every interesting smell within a hundred yards.

For pets with more energy than patience, The Hub by Pack Animals will bring a miniature obstacle course and an interactive sniff patch to Alexander Square. These activities offer dogs an opportunity to explore, exercise, and put their natural curiosity to work. While their humans admire the costumes, the participating pups can enjoy something far more appealing than compliments from strangers. For a dog, an obstacle to conquer or an interesting scent to investigate can be considerably more rewarding than winning the approval of the fashion police.

The celebration will also feature a separate Halloween experience at The Hub's Level 2 location. Its third annual Haunted Hub event runs from 1 to 5 p.m., offering additional activities for dogs and their companions. Organizers have announced Halloween-themed activity stations, haunted obstacle adventures, an expanded sniffing area, interactive games, and professional pet photography. The festivities also include dog-safe sushi supplied by Bamboo Sushi, proving that Halloween dining has become considerably more sophisticated since the days when a biscuit was considered an extraordinary culinary achievement.

Unlike the complimentary outdoor parade, the Haunted Hub experience requires paid admission. City Center's event information lists tickets at $10 per person, with one dog permitted per person, although an October 8 report from San Ramon Patch described a different admission structure. Visitors interested in attending the indoor celebration should confirm the latest pricing and participation requirements with the organizers before arriving. The outdoor parade remains free, making it an accessible option for families who simply want to enjoy the spectacle.

The setting itself adds something special to the occasion. City Center Bishop Ranch, designed by the internationally recognized Renzo Piano Building Workshop in collaboration with BAR Architects, was created around the idea of a welcoming public gathering place. With its open-air architecture, shops, restaurants, and central square, the development offers a setting where neighbors can meet outside the usual routines of shopping and dining. For one afternoon, the gathering place will belong just as much to San Ramon's four-legged residents as to the people holding their leashes.

Of course, bringing dozens of enthusiastic dogs into a shared public space requires a little common sense. City Center welcomes dogs but requires them to remain leashed and under their owners' immediate control. Organizers have not announced a specific costume requirement beyond the event's dress-up theme, but owners should choose outfits that allow their pets to move, breathe, and see comfortably. An elaborate vampire cape might impress the crowd, but not if its reluctant wearer spends the afternoon trying to escape it. The best costume is one the dog can tolerate while still enjoying the festivities.

City Center Bishop Ranch is located at 6000 Bollinger Canyon Road in San Ramon, with complimentary self-parking available in its parking garage. The Howl-O-Ween parade takes place Sunday, October 25, from 2 to 3 p.m., while The Hub's separate festivities run from 1 to 5 p.m. For additional information, visitors can contact City Center at 925-815-1902. Whether your companion arrives dressed as a ghost, a superhero, or simply a very handsome dog, this Halloween celebration offers an opportunity to enjoy some harmless silliness together. And if a few costumes get chewed along the way, that is simply the price of doing business with an audience that considers shoes edible.
