As of Monday, the mysterious respiratory dog disease has been confirmed in California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington. Oregon, in particular, has reported over 200 cases since mid-August, raising further concern about the widespread nature of this illness.
While some states are grappling with rising cases, local vets like Dr. Kendrick in Knoxville have not observed any surge in respiratory diseases compared to previous years. However, he advises pet owners to stay vigilant, especially as the seasons change.
Symptoms of the mysterious dog disease include sneezing, coughing, lethargy, difficulty breathing, rapid breathing, and more. Dr. Kendrick emphasizes that pet owners should seek veterinary attention if they notice any of these signs, and he recommends keeping dogs up-to-date on the kennel cough vaccine.
The silver lining in this mystery is that the majority of dogs with infectious respiratory tract diseases recover uneventfully, according to infectious disease expert Scott Weese. Treatment involves managing clinical signs with measures like oxygen therapy and antibiotics, but prevention remains key.
